Throughout the Asian continent, Chinese Green tea has been, and still is a very popular tea. Green tea tends to have the taste, fragrant smells and color of spring, but probably most importantly presents the drinker with a plesant bouquet. Green tea contains most of the benefits of phytonutrients, which are chemical compounds (beta-carotene) which occur naturally in plants. Most importantly of all, Green tea contains very little caffeine.
In some parts of the world, consuming green tea is often prescribed as a very effective way of suppressing the appetite which can result in weight loss. Green tea also contains powerful antioxidants, called 'epigallocatechin-3-gallate' or EGCG catechins. This enables Green tea to have natural health benefits. This also aids effective weight far more readily than other weight loss products, such as diet pills or supplelments.
The high level of EGCG in Green tea increases the metabolism, which in turn increases energy levels and the body's fat burning process. Some people believe that this happens even whilst sleeping! These EGCG catechins can also stop your body absorbing fat. Green tea has been used to lose and maintain weight for thousands of years in China.
It is also believed that these EGCG antioxidants boost the immune system, which we all know protects us from diseases, whilst improving skin and slowing down the aging process.
The Preparation Of Green Tea Leaves
After the leaves have been harvested, they are steamed which makes them soft and pliable and this prevents the leaves from fermenting, or even changing color. Having been steamed, the leaves are then rolled, spread out and then "fired" (dried with hot air or pan-fried in a wok) until they are crisp. The resulting greenish-yellow tea has a slightly astringent flavor, close to the taste of the fresh leaf.
There are numerous varieties of Green tea products available that you can purchase from all herbal stores. It is always best though to make sure that there are no chemical additives present.
